Wordpress.com may be banned from Brazil

[digg=http://digg.com/world_news/Wordpress_com_may_be_banned_from_Brazil]
Is Brazil the new China? In a move similar to Youtube’s block, a brazilian judge ordered all brazilians ISPs to block a Wordpress.com blog. The blog and the reason of the block are still unknow…

According to Abranet, the Brazilian Association of Internet Providers, there’s about 1 million brazilians blogs hosted in Wordpress.com.

The order to block wordpress.com was sent to Abranet who sent it to all associated ISPs. In an interview, Eduardo Parajo, Abranet’s president said: “We must not discuss a court order, we must obey it. Since it’s not possible to block only the blog’s address, all the acces to any wordpress.com sites will be forbidden in Brazil”.

According to Alexa, Wordpress.com ranks the 27th position in Brazil’s most accessed pages.

The decision to block wordpress.com came from the judge Maury Ângelo Bottesini, last month…

Now lets think a little about it… They didn’t said what is the blog and the reason to block it.. Is there really a blog and reason? Or may it be just an excuse to shut up bloggers, who are seen as a threat by the brazilian government, the brazilian justice and the brazilian tradicional media? There are millions of brazilian bloggers speaking about the corruption in the our government and in the brazilian court. One example was the blogs that showed that Senator Renan Calheiros was using public money to pay her lover child support and the Google Bomb they made to the Senate’s site, pointing it as “National Shame” in Google’s search… Another example was the federal judge who forbided the games Counter Strike and Everquest.. And, of course, the world remembers the day Youtube was blocked in Brazil because of the model Daniela Cicarelli who had public sex on a beach in Spain.

Unfortunately brazilians dont know the meaning of freedom. They think that freedom is only carnival and sex on TV… Probably millions of brazilians dont even care about the block of wordpress.com… Probably they’ll keep watching lame and idiotic televisions shows like Big Brother and novelas while drinking their beers illuding theirselves that they are free. And the government will keep shutting the mouth of anyone who dare’s to show the sad truth about our panis et circencis politics…

Well my friend, if you’re reading this and you’re not brazilian, you’re free to call our country a Banana Republic…

And if you’re brazilian you can read about it in these sites: Molobakk, RLSNews, Corto cabelo e pinto, Guia do PC, pBlog, MeioBit and Rodrigo Flausino. If want, you can join the blog Não ao Bloqueio do Wordpress and put a badge against the block on your site.

  1. Shit, the freedom in my country is dying. We Brazilian must stand up and fight against this to guarantee our freedom.

  20. What’s the soon-to-be-banned blog? What’s it about?

  21. If you depend on link or site selling as a form of monetization you will definitely want to increase your http://www.alexa.com/data/details/main?url=www.fortunehotels.in Alexa rank, because it will increase your bargaining power when it comes to ad pricing.

  23. I’m trying to get more factual information on this due to some discrepancies in your report. For example, there are currently almost 3 million free blogs on WordPress.com, of which probably around 1 million are considered “active” with human activity. Of those million, or even the 3 million, I don’t think Brazil is overwhelmingly represented to justify the claim in your report. :D
But Turkey banned WordPress.com blogs due to one blogger, and other countries have also taken such sweeping decisions, truly stupid IMHO, so it doesn’t take much. I’d just like to see more facts about this issue to understand what happened and what WordPress.com can do about it, if anything.

I did find Brazil: Bloggers united against Wordpress ban by Global Voices to give a much more detailed account, for those truly interested in the facts behind the case. Thanks for sharing the news, and for encouraging me to find the facts in the issue.

  24. Escreveu esse texto em inglês por quê? By accident you are American?

  25. Galera, obrigado pelos comentários :) Thank you all for the comments :)
Lorelle: The post in advocacy online may seem more detailed? But is it acurate? There are a lot of posts in portuguese about it, but my post was the first in english… I had read that it was about a video of a girl having sex, but by the time I read it, it was only in ONE blog. All the others I have read was not mentioning that. Also, the blog the said about it was didnt cite the source of the news. And it was a Problog (you know, the kind of blog made for search engines and adsense moneys…), so I didnt gave to much attention to it. I prefered to write a post with less information but that I was 100% shure of what I was writing! :D

  31. Dan: Fuck you asshole! At least I know more than one language… Why don’t you try to say a word in portuguese? Probably you think that portuguese is spanish.. Fuck you! Go suck your daddy’s balls! Asshole! Even if my english sucks it is still better than yours. One more thing: I dont have any obligation to know english because it’s not my main language!
