Ubuntu's Mom

I spent more than a week without posting a single reason: My mother got a computer of my grandfather. The PC is a Pentium 4 with 1GB of RAM. It was almost a week of work that, although stressful, it was good fun.

The PC came with Windows XP that my grandfather wore. My mother wanted to have the Ruindows at first, but I also wanted by the Ubuntu. One way or another I should format the PC to partition (and even if it was because I would only Windows format to make a clean installation).

One problem was that the installation of XP would not. Stopped at about 20% and fought. Ruindows decided to quit and leave only the Ubuntu. After installing the Ubuntu saw that the network did not work at all (and I needed it to stop working to set up the Ubuntu and install other programs with apt-get). After several tests came to the conclusion that the plate was onboard with her problems. I got the network card of the Pentium 100 and that she had put in the Pentium 4. Voilà! Network running, running Internet!

A funny thing is that a colleague of mine from college (which obviously has more experience than I do with Windows - at least with XP, because the last I used Windows before starting with Linux was the 2000) told me a card network with defect can lead to installation of Windows XP to stop and that would only continue to disable the onboard card by the BIOS. As the Ubuntu already installed opted not to install Windows and just stay with Ubuntu.

Ubuntu running round, network running, just one more problem: Compiz or Beryl would not work. The video card (onboard as well) is one of the PC that are on the blacklist. Okay ... 3D effects are not necessary, only legal ;)

After that I went to the next step: Giving an update on Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon I installed. This step took hours, it had almost 300MB of files to download, but okay ... I did the update and then the Ubuntu 7.10 was already upgraded.

It appears that there another problem: My mother did not like the brown and orange theme of Ubuntu (Human). Here I come in gnome-look.org hunt some themes for my mother to use. I just do not like many of who were there. He needed a clear theme, beautiful, with visual appeal and yet not too flashy. I ended up getting a (already forgot the name), giving a modified to stay with the outlines of windows of another theme and installed a version of Gnome icons Crystal Project of Everaldo. Almost an entire day to get leave to find themes that pleases my mother (and I also download various wallpapers). If the Net Virtua not do this dirty from traffic shaping would be all right soon.

The annoying part was my mother who wanted Windows as well. Of course, I would not get into dual boot. Decided for the first time in my life by standing in the world of virtualization. At this point I had a lot of tips Timm I recommended the one of VMWare who, for whatever reason, did not boot at all. With that finished installing the VirtualBox (which worked perfectly - except for games). I installed the XP and some programs that my grandfather had this PC and lent me the CDs to install to my mother because she would like maybe (Houaiss, Encyclopedia Britannica etc). After that sent an email to my grandfather with a screenshot of how the work was getting:

As you can see, let some of Gnome icons, such as Firefox and Thunderbird, and great for her :)

After that continued Ruindows of configuring the virtual machine. I installed the ClamWin AntiVirus that is Open Source and then gave some updates (boring thing all the time wanting to restart the Ruindows and still trying to pressure. Something like: "Either you press cancel or restart the fuck in 1 minute !!!!") . Below the installation of such a screenshot of Windows Defender.

Following the installation of Windows Defender could see how the M $ really is a comedy. Is not that funny:

Look at this, ahuehaeueahueawu! A program from M $ itself (Windows installed here was an original version of XP Professional that my grandfather had given to my mother because in his new PC it is running Vista). If you look at the screenshot you will see that the name is "Windows Genuine Advantage" and editor is writing "Microsoft Corporation" and even with that they left the warning:

"While files from the Internet can be useful, this type of file could harm your computer. Only install software from publishers that you trust. What's the risk?

Right away you laugh or cry? I do not know. Just know that every time I remember that I just laugh ;)

My mother also wanted the Office of M $ simply to have more options. I finished installing it for (the virtual machine, despite being installed in Ubuntu Wine). The idea I was leaving the PC it 100% to everything she could need. I also an icon with the symbol on the Windows desktop to call it the WinXP with only two clicks or without the need to display the window VirtualBox, only the window of the virtual machine.

In my opinion, have the Ruindows ended up being useful for one thing:

Roller Coaster Tycoon ;)

Ubuntu also set up in the Pidgin with GTalk and ICQ her she wore a long time ago. They also installed the Brasero for her burning CDs and DVDs

I had a great help to post excellent Ubuntu Paradise done by dayer.

And obviously could not fail to install a Mame to play a little while expecting some downloads and updates. Below is a screenshot of the game running GXMame Captain Commando:

Ah yes, I put them also notinhas (gnome-notes) for my mother to make annotations.

Another problem that I had to be the video card was able to run DVDs on programs like Totem, MPlayer and Ogle. The solution was to install the VLC that you have not used but I love it. I configured the video output of VLC for the X server and worked properly. At Totem not found the option to configure the video output, but I read later that the Totem is just a frontend for GStreamer. Then see if I set it right, but for now it will not be necessary since the VLC is configured to play all that video is shown. Oh, of course, also installed all over the codec for video and audio.

After that lacked the mouse set that sometimes gave some problems and is not even working. Only disable an option regarding the mouse in the BIOS (do not remember now what was more). Now it's all round : D

Needed just buy a keyboard and mouse to it (before was with my). I spent less than 40 dollars and put an optical mouse and a keyboard. All PS2 and black. As I did not display a charity. I have 17 inches to my mother and now I am writing this post staring at a screen of 15 inches with problems of colors. Sometimes the colors usually work, sometimes it is yellow, sometimes add the red, sometimes everything is in black and white, but okay ... Just give a pat on the screen from time to time ;)

Oh yes, after years without using computer at home (only a half-mouth XP at work) my mother used for the first time Linux and loved ;) Seen as was the computer, called me (I was in the house of my girlfriend) and said he loved the computer and it was perfect! Mission accomplished! After so much work just really paying off. Now let's see if convinced my mother to open a blog also hehehehe : D

Ah, so you have time I will see if any write tutorial on VirtualBox ...

If you liked this post, you can pay me a cafe that will serve as an excellent fuel for what I write more posts;)

  1. Well done!

  2. Good job.

By the way, explains the solution to get people to move files from the real system (ubunto) for the virtual system (xp) and vice versa.

When I used the qemu, the most boring ... it was that several cases of the fazr, but all were a nuisance.

  3. It was to show the ball customization. Convince someone else to use Linux, congratulations!

  4. Windows always get a way to get a headache hehe, but like much of its customization!

My notebook comes today or tomorrow, it already comes with Linux, but if no distribution is not good, I will by the Ubuntu him, that my pc here has only Ubuntu!

  6. Nice guy, did well to put Linux for your mother! It's like the guy up there told .. "Covenceu someone else to use Linux" :-)

  7. kra, tried throughout net. how do I put a shortcut directly to the emulated OS?

  8. Look, it was as good a presentation of screens in Windows XP vondade giving up installing Windows XP, because it s almost everything good that it becomes essential to have you emulated.

But its investee and perseverance were remarkable and deserve to be recognized. Now you see how long Windows XP will be emulated in virtual, or selection and will be more impressive, becoming the default system.

I think we should have the environment that we meet, with no need to deprive AOL user. But has the side of those who are willing to invest time in reaprendizado and adaptation.

  9. Galera, thanks for the comments ... 33 visitors now online (BR-end Linux rox: D)

Eltern: in fact my mother is not using XP virtualizing. Even though I do not like Windows or the M $, I decided to do this work for my mother. And it came to a conclusion that virtualizing Windows is much better for Linux than on a dual boot. Dual boot means that any thing that you can not do or he will learn on Linux and Windows for this project has to go out of Linux. With the XP virtualizing, she can do what you have to do in Windows without leaving the Linux. The deal here is they work side by side. Linux is the standard system, but Windows meet any need that my mother can not resolve on Linux, such as playing Roller Coaster Tycoon ahuaehueahuaehu; D But the law is that even if it a problem in XP, simply use the backup the image of him; OF also remember that it does not need an OS to get off into the other. She'll use it whenever you want in the next time you want : D
Rodrigo: You have a right to command if you call him by that VirtualBox is as follows:
vboxmanage startvm "Name of Virtual Machine." Then you call the Windows XP (which was with this exact name of my mother's PC was the command:
    vboxmanage startvm Windows XP; D

Rick: Yeah :) Ubuntu is what! But already hopes the release of Hardy Heron you do not have to give an update after very large; D

Barbed wire: So guy, VirtualBox is a nice option which means that any directory on your PC you choose is seen by Windows as a shared folder on the network. There is only how you map the network drive : D I forgot to mention that. also forgot to take screenshot of Seamless mode; / / / hehehehe! Let me see if I make a tutorial on VirtualBox compensate for my mistake!

Rafael, Thiago, VDIAS: Thank you for your kind words gang; D

  10. I am to buy a notebook and I think I will donate my desktop for my mother.

I am also with the idea of putting Ubuntu, after all, I have to format the OS every month.

However, because she knows almost nothing of Windows, I will teach her to use Ubuntu.

I will not need to format for quite some time, hehehe.

    Congratulations.
    Hug

  11. Very expensive show, now gives us the recipe to use this issue which in my opinion was very nice. and also how to configure these icons in the gnome.

I will be waiting huh silfar@gmail.com

  12. If you make incremental backup image of the windows where Linux or turn off the antivirus needs in the windows :)

  13. "So guy, VirtualBox is a nice option which means that any directory on your PC you choose is seen by Windows as a shared folder on the network."

ok, if it is so simple that 's the best qemu.
qemu emulates how the network cards you want, but then you need to emulate (the real system) a virtual card interface (tap0) that uses the / dev / tun, establish links between the two virtual cards and then put the samba to the noise ... most annoying is that only you can configure the interface tap0 after qemu boot or not to establish links between the two ... it was so boring that when it came to pass files "small" was easier to use a pen as a USB disk in extra virtual system .

  16. Good! Very good!

  17. Dude, congratulations. I am an annoying player, because sign thousands of blogs on Google Reader, and never comment, but in this post was bound to come leave a message. I read it in excitement, as if watching something kind of a football game (in the case, with more excitement, because I do not see a lot of football). Already disclose to some people who still believe that a normal person can not come to enjoy Linux, and one of them even asked me a copy of Ubuntu just to see what is his. Great work!

  18. Galera, thank you for the feedback, D v. happy I am that this post has liked you : D

    | Fly |: I was very happy with his comment ... went a long absent this blog because of my work in Galacta.org (my other project; D), but if I see time for arrumo post more caring and more out of this blog : D I loved your comment and I was very happy with him. Thank you very much : D
