OpenMoko Illuminated: Enlightenment on your cellphone!

The site of Rasterman, creator of Enlightenment, we read the following:

"Well, now it is official. I work for OpenMoko. That means I will be involved with open source once again. I am excited about the idea of Linux on mobile phones. Even more excited by the fact of being open, "hackeável."

One thing I always wanted to see was the Enlightenment on mobile phones. He can do it. He can be wonderful. I have some ideas we always wanted to do. The Enlightenment 0.17 yet to be released as a desktop WM - but I want to extending it and leave him in line to make it a viable interface for mobile phones. Wait and see ...

One thing that I have to say now is ... "Hello Moko".

Despite the Enlightenment (which is a lightweight alternative to the well to KDE and Gnome) did not gain as much attention as its competitors, he has loyal followers and enthusiasts and is already starting to have some commercial adoption, such as the distribution that is GOS in the Everex computers.

The software OpenMoko make much use of the GTK toolkit, which is also used in devices based on Maemo, as the Nokia N810. GTK provides a solid framework for development of applications, but it has some demerits remarkable. As Rasterman explained, the predominance of the use of the GTK user interface consumes memory that could be better exploited.

Swap some interactive components based on GTK with software that use the technology equivalent of the Enlightenment, means a very significant reduction of memory and increase the responsiveness (yes, that word exists. It's translation of "responsiveness". Swear that is not felt this term would put in the article the word "responsibility" equal to the human life-loka speak - despite the fact that the word responsibility, in fact, has a meaning referring to Judaism) of the device.

According Rasterman, using pieces of Enlightenment will bring more elaborate visual effects and an experience more visually rich products OpenMoko.

Rasterman shown to Paul Ryan (one of the authors of blogging ARS Technica, where the bulk of the information was taken from this post) a prototype of OpenMoko Neo1973 running a desktop version of Enlightenment 17. The whole environment worked and was "millstone responsibility" (Ahaaaaá !!!). Even though he is running a regular version of the E17 only for tests at the OpenMoko, the final version of the software platform for OpenMoko will be a hybrid of a customization of components based on the Enlightenment and GTK software. All designed and made specifically for a better interactivity with the screen sensitive to touch.

The guys who saw this video on LinuxOSS walked arrumando defect and commenting that this is not very practical. But as I said before, will not be quite the Enlightenment environment that will interface with a mobile phone. They'll still want more change and use the libraries is EFL (Enlightenment Foundation Libraries) to improve the performance and functionality of OpenMoko. In my opinion this is one of the most interesting things that has to do with OpenMoko on the interface.
